Removals to Kenya

The corridor that most changes how people think about a moving schedule, because the key paperwork is lodged before departure rather than on arrival. Get it wrong and the container is already at sea when the problem surfaces.

Almost every other route lets you fix paperwork while the goods travel. This one does not.

Who moves this way

  • People relocating to Nairobi for work, in development, agriculture, technology or professional services.
  • Families moving to the coast, and returning Kenyan households bringing a UK home back.
  • Long-stay residents and retirees, usually self-funded and with time to plan properly.

How the goods travel

By sea in a container to Mombasa, or by air for a small urgent consignment. The sea leg is routine; the pre-departure documentation is where the work is.

From Mombasa the inland leg to Nairobi is substantial and is planned and quoted as a movement in its own right rather than as a delivery. Coastal destinations are short onward legs from the port.

Where we deliver

Nairobi A long inland leg from the port, then gated compounds and apartment blocks.
Karen and Lavington Established residential districts with long private drives and gate procedures.
Mombasa and the coast Port on the doorstep and short onward legs to Nyali, Diani and Malindi.
Nakuru and the Rift Valley Long inland journeys on good main roads.
Kisumu and the west The longest domestic leg on this route, planned as part of the movement.

Customs, and who obtains what

Kenya requires import documentation to be lodged before the goods arrive, and in practice before the container sails. Relief on used personal effects exists for a person taking up or resuming residence, claimed against a detailed inventory. The pre-departure filing is what distinguishes this route from almost every other on this site.

The file, split in two

DocumentObtained byWhat it is
Detailed valued inventory Us Item by item with values. It underpins the pre-departure filing, so it has to be right first time.
KRA PIN You The tax identification number. The filing depends on it, so begin it early.
Work permit or residence documentation You The status under which you are entering or returning.
Passport and evidence of residence abroad You For returning residents, the period spent outside the country matters to the relief.
Pre-arrival import declaration Us Lodged by us or our appointed agent before the container sails.
Proof of the Kenyan address You Lease or purchase documentation in your name.

Rows marked You attach to you as a person and cannot be obtained on your behalf — they are the items that set the schedule. Rows marked Us are built here from the inventory taken at the survey.

A schedule that runs earlier than you expect

On most routes the paperwork can be tidied up while the goods are in transit. A missing certificate is chased, a description is clarified, a number is supplied. It is stressful and it is survivable.

Kenya does not work that way. The import documentation is lodged before arrival and, in practice, before the container sails — which means the tax number, the residence documentation and a correct inventory all have to exist while your furniture is still in your house.

The practical consequence is that the decision schedule on this route starts considerably earlier than people expect. The survey, the inventory and your own document-gathering all move forward, and a sailing is booked once the file is complete rather than in hope.

It also means the inventory has to be right first time rather than approximately right. It is the document the filing is built on, so vague descriptions are not merely untidy — they are a problem lodged in advance.

Then the inland leg. Nairobi is a long way from Mombasa and that journey is a real road movement under its own arrangement, planned and quoted as part of the job rather than added at the end. And at the address, gated compounds are common: expect named vehicles, named crew and time at the gate. Nothing on this page is immigration, tax or legal advice.

Questions on this route

01 Why does the paperwork come before the sailing?

Because Kenyan import documentation is lodged before arrival and in practice before the container sails. There is no tidying it up while the goods are in transit.

02 What should we start first?

The tax identification number and the residence documentation, before you think about sailing dates. The filing depends on both.

03 How accurate does the inventory need to be?

Right first time. It is the document the pre-departure filing is built on, so a vague description is a problem lodged in advance rather than a tidying-up job.

04 How long is the leg to Nairobi?

Substantial from Mombasa, and it is a real road movement rather than a delivery. It is planned and quoted as part of the job.

05 What about gated compounds?

Common and entirely workable with notice. Expect to name the vehicle and the crew in advance and to allow time at the gate.

06 Should we bring appliances?

Kenya runs UK-style plugs and a compatible voltage, which is unusually convenient. Whether large appliances justify the container space is still worth a conversation.

Both addresses, roughly what is going, and where you are in the paperwork. We will build the schedule backwards from the document that heads it.
